Bubble Tea was the most “happening” drink back in the 90s. Back then, one of our young directors were still seeking education elsewhere. And slowly, it has become a habit to take one of this drink during the long hours of brain cracking. Days passed, years passed… yet the habit hasn’t stop. So it was naturally the interest to start such a business when the opportunity comes.
Nothing was easy at first. Most of the bubble tea powder were imported from non-muslim countries, along with other products such as the famous black pearl （黑珍珠）. The tea used in the drink preparation too were from non-muslim countries. Local industries who can supply the products learnt their skill from abroad, but also from non-muslim countries. So supply became the most difficult challenge to overcome. The target market could only be non-muslim if we were to introduce this in Malaysia.
Fortunately, hard work does pay off. Finally we came across a manufacturer who is from one of the biggest Muslim country in the world, Indonesia!! However, the story does not end there. Indonesia’s industrial regulation is far from similar with ours. Many ingredients that are allowed in Indonesia are not allowed in Malaysia. It is like Americans drive on the left hand side, while we drive on the right hand side. And we had to convince the manufacturer to do OEM based on our Malaysian Food Act requirements. Well, what had to be done, must be done. And we succeeded.
Now we have someone who is willing to work with us to manufacturer the products, but we still see many disadvantages with the existing bubble tea product. We sat in the brain storming room for days and days, much like jurors who cannot agree on a verdict, must continue with the task until they can resolve the matter by coming to a conclusion. Everyone was so tired but again hard work put into the brain storming session didn’t go to waste.
